What is UAE Corporate Tax?

Corporate Tax in the UAE is a federal tax on business profits. It came into effect for tax periods starting on or after 1 June 2023, and the basic structure is simple enough: the first AED 375,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0%, everything above that at 9%.

But “simple enough” is exactly where most businesses get tripped up. The actual number you owe depends on your structure, your income sources, and whatever exemptions or reliefs might apply — and those details matter more than the headline rate ever will.

That’s the part we spend our time on at Arth Consultants. Not the rate everyone already knows, but what it actually means once it’s applied to your business.

Who Needs to Register?

Short answer: probably you. If your business is subject to Corporate Tax, you need to register with the FTA and get a Corporate Tax Registration Number.

This isn’t limited to companies, either. Partnerships, Free Zone entities, even individuals running a business can be caught by it — the FTA’s threshold for a natural person is AED 1 million in business revenue in a calendar year.

There are exemptions, but “exempt” doesn’t always mean “nothing to do.” Some exempt persons still have to register or notify the FTA, so it’s worth confirming rather than assuming you’re in the clear.

Registration is one of those things that sounds administrative until you’re actually doing it. We handle it end to end — figuring out if you need to register in the first place, gathering the right documents, setting up (or fixing) your EmaraTax profile, and getting the application submitted correctly the first time.

We also check the submission afterward and follow up with the FTA if something needs chasing. And once you’re registered, we tell you plainly what happens next, so you’re not caught off guard by a deadline three months later.

Registration currently goes through EmaraTax, the FTA’s platform.

Your return is due nine months after your Tax Period ends. That sounds like a lot of runway until you’re the one reconciling a year’s worth of accounting records against tax rules that don’t always line up neatly with how the books were kept.

We take that on — reviewing the financials, sorting out the tax adjustments, working through what’s actually taxable, checking what reliefs apply, building the computation, and filing it through the right FTA channel. If payment needs sorting too, we’re there for that part as well.

Corporate Tax Calculation & Review

Your Corporate Tax calculation starts with your accounting records, but the final taxable income may not be the same as your accounting profit. We review the figures, identify the relevant tax adjustments, check deductible and non-deductible expenses, and consider applicable exemptions and carried-forward losses.

At Arth Consultants, we review your tax position before the return is prepared and filed. This gives you a clearer understanding of how your Corporate Tax has been calculated and helps reduce the risk of errors or missed adjustments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions business owners ask most often about UAE corporate tax — rates, registration, free zones, and compliance — from the team at Arth Consultants.

What is UAE Corporate Tax?

UAE Corporate Tax is a federal tax imposed on the Taxable Income of businesses and other persons that fall within the scope of the Federal Decree-Law No. 47 of 2022 (‘UAE Corporate Tax Law’). The tax applies from financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023, subject to the applicable rules and exemptions.

Corporate Tax is generally charged at 0% on Taxable Income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on the portion of Taxable Income exceeding AED 375,000. Different rules apply to Qualifying Free Zone Persons, which may benefit from a 0% rate on Qualifying Income. Large multinationals with global consolidated revenue of €750 million or more may be subject to a 15% Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax.

Corporate Tax registration requirements depend on the type and status of the person and whether they fall within the scope of the UAE Corporate Tax regime. UAE juridical persons subject to Corporate Tax are required to register with the FTA. Natural persons carrying on a Business or Business Activity are required to register where their annual business revenue exceeds AED 1 million (which does not include wages, personal investment income and real estate investment income).

Deadlines vary by entity type and licence issue date, as set out under FTA Decision No. 3 of 2024. Missing the applicable deadline can result in an administrative penalty.

Late registration and late filing both trigger administrative penalties under FTA rules, in addition to any tax and penalty due. Persistent non-compliance can lead to further FTA scrutiny.

Yes. The FTA has an initiative that can exempt eligible persons from the AED 10,000 administrative penalty for late Corporate Tax registration. To benefit, the first Corporate Tax Return must generally be submitted within seven months from the end of the first Tax Period. For eligible Exempt Persons required to register, the Annual Declaration must be submitted within seven months from the end of the first Financial Year.

Yes. Establishment in a UAE Free Zone does not by itself take a business outside the Corporate Tax regime. Free Zone entities may be required to register, file returns and maintain the required records. A Free Zone Person that satisfies the applicable conditions may qualify for the special Corporate Tax treatment available to a Qualifying Free Zone Person.

A Qualifying Free Zone Person is a Free Zone Person that satisfies the conditions prescribed under the UAE Corporate Tax legislation and related decisions. A QFZP may benefit from a 0% Corporate Tax rate on Qualifying Income, while Taxable Income that does not qualify for the 0% treatment may be subject to the applicable 9% rate.

A Corporate Tax Return and the Corporate Tax payable are generally due within nine months from the end of the relevant Tax Period, unless another deadline is prescribed by the FTA. Businesses should determine their Tax Period and track the specific filing and payment deadline applicable to them.
